The effectiveness of medicines depends to a large extent on the correct and consistent taking of the medication by the patient. Therapy-loyalty is an important precondition for the success of a treatment with medicines. With the treatment of HIV patients there was the need for an effective resource to improve therapy-loyalty. Janssen developed Pillcoach for this purpose in collaboration with physicians and nursing staff.
The Pillcoach app is an ‘HIV medication therapy-loyalty application’ for smartphones. The Pillcoach was developed to monitor how the HIV medication is being taken. Together with the HIV treater a medication schedule can be created before the app is activated. The patient is sent messages showing the pill-taking timetable. The patient can indicate if the medication has been taken and any reasons why it may not have been.

Daily monitoring of taking the medication results in an overview of the therapy-loyalty of the patient. This summary can be evaluated together with the treater. Physicians and nursing staff are enthusiastic about Pillcoach as a resource for treating their patients. The joint approach has led to a practical and useable application that assists patients during their treatment.
